As you know, I have the utmost respect for Dr. D. James Kennedy. He has written another wonderful book entitled, What if America were a Christian Nation Again' (Thomas Nelson Publishers: Nashville, TN 2003). In his book, Dr. Kennedy speaks of the Sovereignty of God, especially as it relates to the discovery and progress of America. What really strikes me about the Almighty is His wind.
God directs the wind at His command. For example, Columbus's ship was moved along by a mysterious wind. Says Dr. Kennedy, 'Columbus's ship, historians tell us, was headed directly toward the Carolinas. But during the long voyage, the frightened, restless crew threatened mutiny. They planned to throw the admiral overboard and return to Europe. Suddenly, the cry went up that land had been sighted to the southeast. Columbus's log tells us that they headed toward that land, but what they had seen was merely a cloud on the horizon. Still the mutiny was averted.
'Several days later, however, the men were once again ready to overthrow the admiral. Oddly enough, a flock of birds flew over the ship, heading southwest. A second correction was made, which diverted the ship from heading toward north Florida; thus, Columbus landed at San Salvador' (page 12). What if the birds had not appeared on the 'wings of the wind'' For one, Americans would be speaking Spanish instead of English. And the English Protestants never would have established a foothold on the eastern seaboard.

God directs the wind. For example, 32 years before the Pilgrims sailed to America the Spanish tried to conquer Great Britain, which would have changed the course of human history. At the time, Spain ruled the seas but was being blighted by Englishmen like Sir Francis Drake. Spain sent out the 'Invincible Armada,' to crush the English once and for all. Not far from Lisbon, the winds blew up a storm and destroyed many Spanish ships. This leveled the playing field'or should I say the battle field. Once the Spanish were routed by the smaller, but faster sailing ships of the British, England ruled the seas and began to colonize a new world. Once again, the wind, directed the course of modern history.
God directs the wind. For example, the winds kept the French at bay in America. Says Dr. Kennedy, 'In 1606, fourteen years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, the French made an effort to colonize New England. Under the leadership of Pierre DeMonts, they made three attempts. On the first two, their ships were driven from the coasts by strong winds, while on the third attempt, the ships were destroyed on the treacherous shoal of Cape Cod, and DeMonts was killed.' Dr Kennedy continues, 'In 1746, the French swept down from Nova Scotia under the leadership of the Duke D' Anville, with forty men-of-war and thousands of French troops, determined to completely wipe out the English colonists and make New England a French possession.
'Receiving intelligence of this coming attack, Reverend Mr. Prince in the Old South Church at Boston stood up before the congregation and called for a day of fasting and prayer so God would intervene. As he prayed, the shutters of the church suddenly began to rattle, startling the whole congregation. He stopped praying and realized that a strong wind had begun to blow. Se he returned to even more earnest prayer. Gradually the wind picked up until it became a raging gale. The Duke D' Anville was not only routed, his fleet was destroyed. Thousands of troops were drowned, and the duke and his leading general committed suicide' (page 13).
I could go on. The Mayflower was, itself, blown off course onto God's course. George Washington was granted divine winds on more than one occasion. In 1776, at Brooklyn Heights, he was surrounded by the British, with no way of escape. It was a fog that blew in and covered him and his men so that they were able to escape the British closure without being detected. Later Washington's men were trapped in Trenton. The muddy conditions kept him from escaping the advancing British; however, overnight a cold wind blew in and froze the muddy ground hard as a rock. Guess what' Washington escaped. It was incidents like these that caused Washington to utter these words, 'The hand of Providence has been so conspicuous in all this, that he must be worse than an infidel that lacks faith, and more than wicked, that has not gratitude enough to acknowledge his obligation.'
God sends the winds. It was Jesus who said that the wind blows where it will. He used the analogy of wind to illustrate the new birth of the human spirit. Just as the wind obeys the voice of God, so the human spirit must submit to the hand of God. Only God can give eternal life. Only God can give new birth in the spirit. How does He do this' It's as mysterious as His wind, but it can be received through Jesus Christ His only Begotten Son. If any man will call upon the name of the Lord Jesus, he shall be born anew in faith. Here again, just like the wind that can't be found by human effort, the Kingdom cannot be entered into by human effort. It takes an act of God. But then again, He's riding on the wings of the wind and coming your way. Let His winds envelope you.

Keep the faith. Stay the course. Jesus is coming soon. I can almost hear the wind beginning to roar.
