We're All In This Together
Steve McDaniel It's simple. We're not alone on this planet, and that's for a reason. We need each other to survive both physically and mentally. These three truths help us keep it all together in our minds.
1. We're all the same
There are lots of examples in the wisdom of the ages from cultures all over the world which indicate a basic belief that we are, at our core, equal. Some cultures for a time will hold individuals and families above others as being of some special breeding, but these are not the beliefs of the ancients.
It is true that we are not all similarly situated at our birth. Some of us are born into families of wealth, privilege, and power. Others of us are born with a special genius or talent. Each of us has at least one gift or talent that we can build upon.
We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, and that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
2. We're all in this together
Don't think we're in this together? Try heading down the freeway in any type of automobile, and imagine that you are sandwiched between two fuel tankers with about 1/4 mile between them. Then imagine each of them jacknifes at the same time, blocking the road at both ends, with no exit in between, and catches fire. Do you think you're in it together with the folks on that road now?
Now imagine that you're on a beautiful planet called Earth, and you have no means to escape the planet to go to another planet.
3. And God Loves Us All
One of the common threads through most religious teaching is that there is a God that loves us. Some teachings separate out certain groups for love while everyone else is hated, but those groups tend to be small and without much influence. The overwhelming majority believes in a God whose main motivation is love, so let's begin there.
