What Does a Professional Life Coach Do?

A professional life coach is something relatively new in the world of therapy. They are not psychologists, but many claim to be able to do the same job that a psychologist does. Most of them claim to be able to help a person get past the problems in their lives and move on to success. So what does a professional life coach actually do to accomplish this?

A professional life coach, also referred to as a personal life coach, is a lot like a psychologist in that they offer a form of therapy. Professional life coaches don't have psychology degrees, however, and they aren't trained to diagnose mental illness. What a professional life coach is trained to do, however, is to help a person understand and accept where he or she is in life and, if there is a problem,  find a way to help move past that. A professional life coach knows a multitude of life coach techniques designed to help a person learn how to succeed in life. Life coaching is not quite like psychological therapy, as the focus is different. Psychological therapy focuses on how you got to where you are. Life coaching, on the other hand, simply focuses on where you are. It doesn't pay attention to how you got there, believing that it's more important to know how to go forward than to focus on the past.

That's really all there is to it. A professional life coach can be a wonderful help, but it may be that what you need is therapy. You'll have to decide for yourself if that's the case. Just remember that you should choose based on what benefits you, not what you think is the "right thing" to do.  Choosing something based on what seems like the right thing to do could rob you of the benefits of either choice.
